The Real-Time Power Trader at IREN will play a key role in managing and optimizing the energy procurement strategy for our data centers within the ERCOT market. This position is critical to ensuring that our data centers operate cost-effectively by managing energy flows in real-time, mitigating risks, and seizing market opportunities.

The ERCOT Power Trading Analyst at IREN will play a key role in managing and optimizing the energy procurement strategy for our data centers within the ERCOT market. This position is critical to ensuring that our data centers operate cost-effectively by managing energy flows in real-time, mitigating risks, and seizing market opportunities.

Responsibilities :

  • Manage and mitigate energy-related risks for our data center operations within the ERCOT market.
  • Optimize power procurement by analyzing real-time market conditions and positions, ensuring cost-effective energy usage.
  • Conduct real-time trading and scheduling for the purchase and sale of electricity and ancillary services to meet the demands of our data centers.
  • Collaborate closely with energy managers and other stakeholders to communicate real-time market conditions and trading decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with ERCOT and FERC regulations, including emergency response procedures to maintain uninterrupted data center operations.
  • Analyze large datasets related to energy consumption and market prices, presenting findings to inform strategic decisions.
  • Prioritize tasks to meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment, ensuring the continuous operation of our data centers.
  • Anticipate and manage 2-3 energy programs, taking full accountability for their outcomes.
  • Regularly monitor models, tools (like Grafana and ARCUS), curtailments, and predictive measures to forecast future conditions such as coincident peaks (CPs).
  • Serve as the main operations and commercial contact for power consumption, overseeing daily operations from optimization to settlements, and managing relationships with key external vendors.
  • Conduct real-time trading and scheduling for electricity and ancillary services, including hedging strategies and monitoring market developments such as the forward curve, cost per KW/hr, and risk scenarios for seasonal changes.

Desired Skills, Qualifications and Competencies include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; a focus in Finance, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the energy sector, with specific experience in real-time trading and operations within the ERCOT market highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of ERCOT market dynamics, including rules, protocols, and trading practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel for data analysis; familiarity with PowerPoint and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey complex information to stakeholders.
  • Basic analytical skills for pricing, risk assessment, and transaction structuring, with a focus on reducing power costs for data centers.
  • Flexibility to work 12-hour rotating shifts in a 24/7/365 operation, including weekends and holidays as required.
